Start with 3/4 minus if you are building a base. It is the crushed rock this market calls by its top size, graded down to fines so it locks up under a load.

Ground and Conditions in Timber

Ground here is tight. Across the Willamette Valley and Portland Basin, the valley floor carries deep silt laid down by ice-age floods, and the foothills run to red clay and silty clay loam.

Rain arrives almost entirely between November and March, 35 to 45 inches of it, and that ground sheds water slowly. A thin base course shows the result first: soft spots, ruts, and pavers that rock when you walk them.

The fix is a base that compacts and a bedding layer that stays put. Silt and clay need a graded, fines-bearing rock under them, not a clean stone that lets water sit at the contact.

Timing matters too. Portland treats October 1 to April 30 as the wet weather season and requires bare ground stabilized within two days, against seven days from May 1 to September 30.

Base and paving work concentrates in the dry season.

Materials for Timber Projects

Bedding is where a patio or flatwork job is won. Set pavers or flagstone on the wrong material and the surface moves within a season.

1/4 Minus, sold here as quarter minus, is the bedding layer under pavers and flagstone. It also tops a compacted base and fine-grades paths.

The fines let you screed it flat and lock the stones in place.

Everything under that bedding starts with 3/4 Minus. Also called 3/4-0 or dense-graded base rock, it is crushed rock graded 3/4 inch down to fines so it compacts and locks up.

It is the standard Oregon base under driveways, parking pads, shop floors and shed bases.

Where the ground is soft before any base goes down, Quarry Run builds up grade. It is raw rock straight from the pit face, not crushed material, and it raises low ground before a graded base course goes on top.

Water needs a way out. Drain Rock, also called 1 1/2 clean or washed drain rock, is washed and open so water moves through it instead of sitting.

It suits French drains, curtain drains, footing drains, drywells and downspout runs.

For a tighter drainage trench or retaining wall backfill, 3/4" Crushed Stone is angular rock with the fines screened out. Washed Sand beds pipe and levels under slabs and flatwork, washed so it drains rather than holds water.

Questions About Gravel and Aggregate in Timber

What gravel is best for a driveway in Timber?

On most Oregon drives you want a minus rock that compacts rather than a clean rock that rolls underfoot. 3/4 Minus is the standard base for a drive, and Driveway Gravel surfaces an existing drive or tops a compacted base.

Both lock up under tires instead of shifting.

What access does the truck need at my Timber address?

A clear, level spot the truck can reach and tip in, with nothing parked in the way and no low branches or wires over the approach. If the drop is behind a gate, tell us the width when you order. Soft ground after rain is the usual reason a delivery in Timber has to be moved, so point out anywhere the truck should not drive.
