After #78 Crushed Stone is spread and settles into place, the chips retain space between them instead of forming a closed layer. The stone is washed, crushed, and angular, with very limited fine material. That makes it useful where drainage needs to remain part of the installation, including French drains, pipe bedding, permeable paver work, and walkways. In the Willamette Valley, winter clay can stay saturated for long stretches, while ground east of the Cascades may be drier and subject to frost.
For a permeable paver walk, place #78 Crushed Stone in the bedding layer after the drainage route has been planned. This keeps the bedding role separate from the supporting layers below it. It can also suit a French drain through wet clay where a clean stone layer is needed near the pipe. Grading names can vary by region, so check the material designation for the order before delivery.

Common Uses
Permeable Paver Bedding
For permeable pavers, this stone fills the bedding and joints while leaving a route for water to drain below the finished surface.
Drainage Layers
Its open stone layer helps water drain behind retaining walls, beside foundations, and below walkways.
Pipe Bedding
The angular chips settle around drain and utility pipe for even support without large empty spaces.
Patio and Path Foundation
Create a compacted, draining support layer below a patio, footpath, or shed foundation, especially where winter clay holds water.
Why Choose #78 Crushed Stone
Free Draining
With minimal fines after washing, the chips leave open spaces for water movement.
Locks in Place
Because the pieces are angular rather than rounded, they knit together and hold their position.
Easy to Spread
Its small size lets you level the material with a rake or screed, including in close residential spaces.
Uses Across the Project
Use the same material for drain lines, setting beds, and supporting layers.
