A cubic yard fills a cube measuring 3 x 3 x 3 feet. Bulk products are ordered by that volume or by the ton, so the job is turning your project area into either unit. These tools calculate that for 24 stocked products using each product's weight per cubic yard. Shredded mulch runs about 600 lb for a yard, while crusher run comes in at 3,000 lb. The cube size is the same, but crusher run weighs five times as much, so a calculator tied to the material gives a better tonnage figure than a general aggregate tool.

Calculation method

Find the square footage first by multiplying the length and width in feet. Change depth from inches to feet by dividing by 12, then multiply it by the area for cubic feet. Divide that figure by 27 to get cubic yards. Apply the material density to the yardage to determine tons.

Cubic yards = (Length ft × Width ft × Depth in ÷ 12) ÷ 27
Tons = cubic yards × density (0.3 for mulch, up to 1.55 for riprap)

Most estimate mistakes come from the depth. Area gets measured carefully, but depth is often guessed. A 10 x 10 patio at 2 inches uses half the stone required for the same patio at 4 inches. Check the material page first when you need the proper depth for the job.

Find the right material

  • For a driveway or parking area, figure the lower crusher run or road base separately from the top layer of driveway gravel or #57 stone. Each layer needs its own calculation.
  • For pooled water, wet trenches, or a French drain through winter clay, allow clean #57 or drain rock at 12 inches or deeper.
  • Put shredded mulch in beds with plants. Choose river rock for a border that does not require regular refreshing.
  • For a bare or patchy lawn, spread 4 to 6 inches of screened topsoil before installing seed or sod.
  • Use fill dirt to build grade or fill a hole, then limit topsoil to the upper 4 to 6 inches.
  • Build a paver patio with compacted base and an exact 1 inch bedding-sand layer. Calculate the base and sand as separate layers with the paver tools.
  • Playground fall areas: maintain pea gravel at a depth of 9 to 12 inches.
  • For an eroding bank or shoreline, install riprap over fabric in layers of 12 inches or more.

Common ordering questions

What calculator should I choose?
Use the calculator for the material on the order, since each one is based on that product's actual weight. To compare pea gravel and river rock for the same path, enter the same dimensions in both. Yardage does not change, but the ton amount and price do.
Should I buy by cubic yard or by ton?
Order by the unit listed on that product page. Gravel and stone sell by the ton, while mulch and soils sell by the yard. Each calculator displays both amounts, so you do not have to convert them yourself.
What level of accuracy can I expect?
The formula is exact, but site conditions vary. Moisture, compaction, and an uneven subgrade can change the quantity by roughly 10 to 15%, so the results give a range and crushed materials include a small default allowance. Check the measurements twice before ordering.
Can one delivery include multiple materials?
Yes. For road base with surface gravel, fill dirt with topsoil, or mulch with edging rock, run a separate calculation for each material and place them together in one order. Delivery is still free.
Are the calculated materials available for purchase?
Yes, all 24 materials can be ordered. Each calculator result goes to its matching product page with the calculated quantity.
